Frequently Asked Questions

Grooming FAQs

  • Unlike traditional groomers, we do not use cages for any part of the grooming process! All pets stay with their personal stylist from drop off to pick up and are not allowed to roam freely with other dogs. This ensures their safety while also providing a calm, stress-free environment.

  • We groom both cats and dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds.

  • We offer a full range of grooming services that includes baths, haircuts, nail trims, teeth brushing, anal gland expression and ear cleaning.

  • Twin Tails uses top of the line professional pet products. We offer several different scent choices, non-scented as well as hypoallergenic products. Upon check in your stylist will ask your preferences for products. All pets’ heads are washed in a tearless shampoo to take the utmost care of those precious faces. If your pet is under a veterinarian’s care and has its own prescribed medicated products, we are happy to use that in place of our product line.

  • We are happy to use any product that you provide as long as it is formulated for dogs. The most common request is for us to use special shampoo for dogs with skin issues or shampoo prescribed from your vet. We are happy to use your product but we also provide many different shampoo options to best fit your pets needs.

  • We have some general questions that give us insight as to if a cat could/should be groomed with us. If your cat struggles with some of the items listed below, we would likely not be a good fit for your cat. Has your cat ever been groomed professionally? If so, were they groomed by themselves or with other dogs around?

We have an open grooming environment, with other dogs present. If the cat is uncooperative and we are unable to complete the groom, the full price of the service will still be owed for the time we reserved for your pet.

  • If a cat is an indoor cat they’re used to people touching them vs. outdoor cats which do not let anyone touch them, making outdoor cats more difficult to groom.

  • We work hard to make the grooming process as stress free and efficient as possible. You will receive a time quote at check in, depending on the size and coat conditions of your pet, normally it takes 1.5 hours to 3 hours for full grooms and 30 minutes to 2 hours for bath and brush sessions. This can vary depending on your pet’s needs. Our services take much less time than traditional groomers thanks to our one-on-one approach!

  • It depends on the breed, coat type and the style you have your pet trimmed into. Very short coats should be groomed on an 8 week or less schedule. Medium coats should be groomed on a 6 week or less schedule. Longer coats should be groomed on a 4 week or less schedule.

Maintenance grooms can be done in between your full grooming sessions. We offer BBT services (Bath, Brush, Trimming) also to keep your pet clean, tangle free and gorgeous in-between its normal haircut sessions. Talk to our scheduling specialists to help you choose a maintenance schedule for your pet.

  • We use a variety of drying methods, depending on the type of coat your pet has. We have high velocity dryers, handheld dryers, fluff dryers and even small fans to gently dry the most sensitive of pets.

  • We do all we can to ensure the safety of your pet and reduce the noise, by utilizing cotton in the ears and happy hoodie, which fits over the head and ears to muffle the sound of the dryer.

  • This is a personal choice, to shave your double coated breed. While we suggest putting your pet on a shorter grooming schedule (booking maintenance grooms) to control the undercoat growth and keep up with the shedding cycles. We will also suggest a longer length to preserve as much of the guard coat as possible, to protect your pets’ delicate skin and overall health.

Shaving does not control shedding. Your pet will continue to shed, albeit much shorter hairs. Shedding is a natural process for your pet, and it can be managed through frequent grooming along with a good diet and exercise. It is seasonal for many breeds, they shed heavier at the change of seasons. Excessive shedding typically means your pet needs to be bathed and brushed more often.

  • Shaving the double coat can cause health problems such as “shave shock” or shave alopecia; where the coat may not grow back at all, may change consistency, color and even texture. Skin issues can occur as well. Most common skin issue is sunburn, since removing the coat removes their protection from the sun and their ability to regulate their body temperature. Your pets’ fur is a thermoregulator and an immunoregulator, this means the fur controls body temperature as well as regulates their immune system.

  • Our deshedding service is a procedure using 3 separate bathing steps and then a specific drying routine. The Twin Tails de-Shedding method will remove the majority of the loose undercoat. It will leave your pet's coat feeling soft and healthy. It will not remove all the undercoat. Your pet needs some of that to help regulate body temperature and immunity. A de-shed session will not stop your pet from completely shedding. With frequent regular deshedding sessions, we can help control shedding by up to 90%.

  • You can easily book an appointment online by filling out a form, emailing us, by phone or text, or you can stop in at either of our locations to book in person. We recommend booking in advance as slots fill up quickly!

  • We require a minimum 4 hour notice to cancel or reschedule appointments with no fees. Less than 4 hour notices will be charged $25 to rebook.

  • While we understand wanting to watch over your pet, for your pets safety and efficiency, we don't allow pet parents to stay during appointments. Pets can often get stressed/anxious to go home when they see their family and this makes their appointment much more challenging for both the groomer and themselves. However, we are happy to answer any questions you have beforehand and provide updates throughout the process.

  • If your pet is high energy, taking a walk beforehand can help them stay calm during their groom.

Give them time to pee and poop before they arrive.

Bring their favorite treats if they are food motivated!

  • Behavior issues are viewed on a case-by-case basis. We do not muzzle throughout the entire grooming session. We will utilize a muzzle for up to 5 minutes on small/medium breeds and up to 15 minutes on large/x-large breeds. If your pet can not be safely handled by our stylists, we will not be able to continue the grooming session.

Special needs pets such as blindness/deafness/lameness, we will groom your pet as long as we feel that it can be done without over stressing the pet and it can be handled safely by our stylists.

We have a no sedated pet policy. We feel that pets who are under any type of medical sedation need to be closely monitored by a veterinarian.
